Americans love their pets, that much is clear. Dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, rats, lizards, fish, and ferrets are all popular pets. There are so many choices when looking for a pet sometimes it is hard to decide which pet is right for you.
The first two obvious choices when trying to decide which pet is right for you, are cats and dogs. Cats and dogs are the most common pets in America. Dogs are known as mans best friend, and many individuals choose to swear by cats intelligences. Dogs require a lot of space to run, and need lots of daily exercise however. Cats need to be trained to use the liter box and require shots to protect against worms and medical problems. Cats and dogs are generally good for individuals that own a home and a decent sized yard. Cats and dogs are also good pets for adults, or families that have older children. Dogs and cats are also a lot of responsibility and work, a dog must be walked and a cats litter box must emptied routinely. Some cats and dogs would not make good pets for individuals will young children. The second choice for good pets are hamsters. Hamsters are very affordable pets. Hamsters require, aside from fish, the least amount of caretaking of any pets. The only maintenance would be to change the bedding for the hamster once every couple weeks. As pets hamster do not need much room at all, just a small enclosure, as such they make good pets for individuals living in houses and apartments. Hamsters also tend to be docile, so they can make good pets for individuals with small children. The last popular choice of pets for Americans is fish. Fish take up a very small amount of space and do not require much maintenance other than keeping an eye on algae levels. Fish, since they are not actually touched or played with, can be an appropriate pet for families with children. Fish themselves tend to be very affordable, however their enclosure can be expensive, with lighting and filters and other necessities.
Whether it be a fish, a dog, a cat, a hamster, or a lizard, a pet can provide love and entertainment. With proper preparation, choosing a pet will be the first step to a very satisfying relationship.
