A long distance move is often one that has been brought about by a job change or perhaps a change in the family, such as getting married. Whatever the reason for moving it is important that things go as smoothly as possible. The good news is that if the entire process is broken down into a checklist of steps then a long distance move will not be the harrowing headache that some people have found it to be.
One of the first steps for a long distance move is to investigate the area in which you want to move. This includes the community, schools if there are children moving, restaurants, electricians, phone company and any other service providers that you may be in need of. This also involves searching for a neighborhood or apartment building that suits the needs of everyone involved. Not only is the budget important when finding a residence but the actual atmosphere of the area as well.
To prepare for the long distance move, order or purchase packing supplies well in advance. You can find boxes from the movers you intend to use. These supplies are great for packing away the things that aren't being used like holiday decorations. This eliminates the amount of last minute packing that is needed for a long distance move. If you're unsure how to pack things then ask the moving company for recommendations or see if they have an instruction guide.
While doing this initial packing it is a good idea to decide what exactly you want to keep. There may be items that you don't use or want anymore and now is the time to make that decision. Ask if you are really going to use whatever object or clothing you are packing up once you get to your new residence. Clean it out now and have a yard sale before you leave.
When making a long distance move be sure to record all personal belongings in case of accident. Also pack a box of essential items that you will need once you arrive at your new residence. This box can include dish soap, trash bags, toiletries, toilet paper, make-up, telephone, paperwork, etcetera. Anything that will be needed the first night or two after making the long distance move. This box should travel in your vehicle with you.
