The use of a proxy server presents me with a ton of advantages to open and unrestricted web access for all web users. The big thing for me is the ability for me to monitor the internet use of our employees. We do not have a strict regulations on what is accessible to users, however, there are policies against the nature of the sites that are visited by our employees. The proxy server can log all transactions made across the internet and is tied to the source computer making the connection, so we can be aware of which users are visiting which web sites.
I can also filter the data flow itself. Since all the requests and connections made to the internet go through the proxy server, the data can be watched by software monitors that can identify and stop malicious traffic before it can invade and infect client computers on your network. The regulation of data in this way can keep computers safe from common types of infection caused by a multitude of different sources by interceding before the infection is allowed to transfer to the client computer initiating the connection.
A proxy server also allows me to split a single internet connection amongst dozens of computers easily and relatively cheaply, and the customizable nature of the types of connections allowed, the security afforded by having an intermediate presence between the outside world and the end users makes a pretty strong case to maintain a proxy server even with the availability of other appliances that can perform the same functions but would require investment in hardware that would need to be integrated into the existing infrastructure and require an initial configuration and testing, not to mention an investment financially that could be avoided simply by sticking with our existing proxy server.
